The Ultimate Weekend in Amsterdam

From winding around the canal streets to soaking in Vincent van Gogh's greatest works of art, here are a few recommendations for your next weekend trip to Amsterdam.

Getting Lost Along the Canal Streets

Your visit to Amsterdam isn't complete without finding yourself wandering around the beautiful canal streets. Here you will find yourself immersed in the charming canal houses, rows of parked bikes, and boats whisking by.

Eat at The Pancake Bakery

I was recommended this breakfast spot by a resident of the city who said I had to try the Pannenkoeken - better known as Dutch pancakes. The woman who recommended this place did not disappoint my taste buds. If it wasn't for the long line of people trying to eat here the next day when I went back for more, I would have gone here both mornings I was in Amsterdam. The Pancake Bakery website can be found here.

Anne Frank House

This moving experience is one of the top things I recommend for travelers coming to Amsterdam. I recommend booking your tickets in advance to ensure you get the time and date you want when you're in town. Tickets are € 14.00 for adults, € 7.00 for 10-17 years, and € 1.00 for 0-9 years (more information about planning your visit can be found on their website.)

Van Gogh Museum

Whether you are a big art fan or not, I highly recommend going to the Van Gogh Museum. To see his works of art all in one place that you have only before seen in photos is truly an unforgettable experience. Tickets are € 19 per person, with free admission under 18 years old. More information about the museum can be found here.

Floating Flower Market

The Floating Flower Maret, also known as Bloemenmarkt, is the world's only floating flower market. I enjoyed getting to browse through the various flowers.

Check out the Amsterdam Tulip Museum

Interested to learn more about the famous Holland tulips? I recommend a visit to the Amsterdam Tulip Museum, where admission is only €5.00. I only just discovered the museum by wandering around the city and found it to be a refreshing museum option. I also thought it wouldn't hurt to find out to grow them in other parts of the world: say my mom's backyard. More information about the museum can be found on its website.

I found Amsterdam to be as charming as I had always pictured it would be. If you have more than a weekend in this city, here are a few other notable things to do.

  • Take a boat tour through the canals

  • Vondelpark

  • Rijksmuseum

  • Westergas

  • Amsterdam Noord renovated shipyard

  • Royal Palace Amsterdam
